You might think “seen one Christmas market, seen ‘em all” but you’d be wrong… They are all a little bit different and the one in Cologne’s Altermarkt is well worth a visit.
It was a different story a few years ago. All the Christmas markets in Cologne used to look pretty much the same and sold mostly the same old tat. But then it all changed!
The Altermarkt & Heumarkt Christmas markets became the Heinzelmänchen Weinachstmarkt, replete with dark wood huts, little elves (models, not real ones, it’s not magic…) and a lot of delicious food. It’s also got the best Gluhwein mugs – so if you’re planning on keeping one as a souvenir this year, make it a Heinzelmänchen cup.
There’s also an ice-rink on the Heumarkt. Admittedly, the ice can be pretty wet when the weather’s warm, but it’s nevertheless a Christmas wonderland at night when the fairy lights twinkle and the Christmas music plays.
Grab a Tasty Pasty to soak up all the Gluhwein
The Heinzelmänchen Weinachstmarkt also has great food. The usual crepes and bratwurst, as well as succulent meat turned on a spit, plus loads of regional specialities. And best of all – cornish pasties.
For the last couple of years, the Tasty Pasty Company has had a stand at the Heinzelmänchen Weinachstmarkt where they sell delicious pasties – the perfect thing to soak up Gluhwein – as well as good old English tea and other specialities from ‘the island’.
This year, they’re offering five of our lucky readers a free cup of tea and a shortbread biscuit, when they buy a pasty at the Christmas market stand. All you have to do is contact Rhine-online on Facebook, send us a message with your name and email, and we’ll send you a voucher that can be redeemed at the Christmas Market Tasty Pasty Company stand.
We look forward to hearing from you!
