Go to any Christmas market and you’ll be able to buy this lethal stuff just about everywhere.
There’s red glühwein, white glühwein, mit schuss (a slug of schnappes), spiced, extra spiced, Bio, flavored with rocket fuel, you name it, someone is selling it.
Otherwise known as mulled wine it directly translates to mean ‘glow wine’ in English. The name is derived from the red hot irons Germanic cultures used to use to heat the wine when the drink first became popular hundreds of years ago. And boy will it make you glow.
Enjoy your hangover
The thing to remember about Glühwein is that it’s got a lot of sugar in it, which means you’re going to have a whopping great hangover the next day.
Other than that – drink it while you can! There’s nothing better than standing around with your friends, drinking warm wine that heats up your body from your toes to your nose, and gradually becoming so drunk you can hardly find your way home.
And what’s more, you won’t be alone! You’ll make new friends, probably lose some of the ones you came with, and the next day you’ll go back and do it all again until the Christmas markets close.
Don’t forget – the price of your glühwein includes ‘pfand’ or a deposit for your mug. You can give your cup back and get the money back, or you can take it home as a souvenir.
