On December 3, it’s popular in some parts of Germany to bring in the Barbarazweig.

December 3, is St. Barbara’s Day and the tradition goes that on this day you should cut a branch from some kind of flowering tree or shrub – cherry is the most common – put it in a jug of water, then place it in a warm spot in your home and wait for the magic to happen.

If you’re lucky the buds will start to open and bloom exactly on Christmas Eve bringing luck to the whole family into the New Year.
