Christmas countdown!

xmas_1

Welcome to the the Rhine-online Christmas countdown. It’s like an advent calendar without the doors… Every day in the run-up to Christmas we’ll be giving you the lowdown on German Christmas traditions, local Christmas markets and telling you where we like to buy our prezzies. We’ll also be throwing in the occasional give-away so keep your eyes peeled! Are you ready? Let’s go.

#1: Advent calendars

You need to be prepared for Christmas in Germany. Kids expect a fully packed advent calendar on December 1, preferably lovingly handmade by a member of the family and stuffed full of tiny delights. A shop bought variant is of course an alternative. But there simply has to be one.

Where did it all begin?

Gerhard Lang is widely considered the producer of the first printed Advent calendar in the early 1900s. His calendar was inspired by one his mother  made for him which featured 24 coloured pictures. Lang included little doors on his, which have become the standard ever since.

You can buy just about any type if advent calendar these days. Here are our top 5 faves:
